Processors

Processors are what makes your computer work – they make the decisions, run the programs and create the images that can be displayed.

There are two major processors that you should think about: CPU and GPU.

Central Processor Unit (CPU)

The CPU is the brains of the whole computer – almost anything that happens goes through the CPU. It’s a general purpose processor – it can do loads of different tasks, from running programs to playing back video and audio. Without a CPU your computer can’t run at all.

Graphics Processing Unit (GPU)

A GPU is a specialised processor – all it can do is create an image to display on a screen. It’s built into the computer, sometimes as part of the motherboard, sometimes on a separate card. Modern GPUs can help out the CPU with playing back video, especially full HD and create 3D graphics for realistic games.
